Hello bloggers and ancient Greece fans! I’m back from weeks of intense late night researching and extreme Girls Scout cookie eating to share information about the late king Philip the second of Macedonia. He was born in Pella, the ancient Macedonian kingdoms capital, in 382 BCE. Philip the second (I’ll call him Philip from now on) was the youngest son of the great king Amyntas the third. His brothers, (both future kings) were Alexander the second and Perdiccas the third. When their father died, Perdiccas took over throne. Meanwhile, Philip was taken hostage in Thebes. After being set free and traveling back to Macedonia, he assisted his brother in preparing the army for war. He introduced new tactics, better weapons, and strengthened the men to win. In 359 BCE, Perdiccas the third died when meeting an Illyrian attack. Since both brothers died Philip was the only one left to rule. He invaded Paeonia in 358 and soon after, beat the Illyrians. In order to gain power, he married Olympis who would mother their son Alexander the third, (Alexander the Great). His great power and military was feared by many and neighboring city-states teamed up and attacked. Their efforts did nothing to Macedonia. Philip later goes on to successfully attack Thrace twice. His only real defeat was to Thessaly but he later defeated them. King Philip the second will always be remembered as a man who gets things done who has a tough military to defeat.
